Characteristics of an Abuser

What does an abuser typically look like? They can look like the person sitting next to you, the person checking you out at the grocery store...they can look like YOU. What characteristics set them apart from everyone else?

An abuser usually:
  • Has a low self-esteem.
  • Believes myths about battering.
  •  Believes in stereotypical gender roles.
  •  Blames the victim and others for their behavior.
  •   Is pathologically jealous.
  •  Presents a dual personality.
  •  May use alcohol or drugs to manage stress.
  • Views their partner as their property or possession.
While many people may think of domestic violence as a "heterosexual" problem, this is simply not the case.
  • In figures reflective of the general population, 1 in 4 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people are battered by a partner (Jane Doe, Inc.).

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention & Prevention (SA/VIP) has been busier than usual coordinating events and raising awareness on the University of South Carolina's campus this month. Every minute spent developing our campaign, building connections with community partners and within the Gamecock Nation is worth it.

Did you know:
Domestic Violence is the leading type of violence against women.
16-24 is the age that women experience the highest rate of interpersonal violence.
SC is ranked #7 in the nation for homicides caused by domestic violence
1-3 college students report physically assaulting a dating partner. (this includes heterosexual as well as same-sex partners).
More than 3 women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in the US every day.
This month of awareness is coming to end soon, but we have a long way to go.
