Stalking Awareness Month Events

Personal safety involves a lot more than looking over your shoulder. In today’s world, it includes securing your personal information, staying on top of technology, and knowing where to turn if things go wrong or you suspect your information has been compromised.

Learn how to best protect yourself this January at the Stalking Awareness Month Information Fair. You’ll meet with security and safety pros from a variety of industries and organizations that will teach you how to best protect yourself from stalkers, identity theft and more. Guests include banks, cell phone providers, on- and off-campus groups and more who will discuss the specifics of personal safety in their areas of expertise and how it relates directly to you. This Student Health Services Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention & Prevention (SAVIP) event takes place Jan. 25, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Russell House second floor lobby.

For more information about the fair, call (803) 777-8248.

This event supports SAVIP’s “Stand Up Carolina” project, a campus-wide initiative to foster bystander accountability and prevent interpersonal violence. Visit http://www.sa.sc.edu/shs/savip/stand-up to get involved.

Circle of 6

Circle of 6 is an app that will be available to download early next year. We're excited about this particular iPhone app because its aim is to help end sexual assaults and domestic violence.

How it works

You will create your "circle of 6" by selecting five contacts:

You may contact members of your "circle" three different ways:
1. Select the car icon to send out an automatic rescue text that says "come get me" and supplies your GPS coordinates.
2. Select the phone icon to send a message for one of them to call you.
3. Select the chat icon to ask for advice, which is really helpful if you aren't sure if the situation is risky or if you don't know what to do.

Go "Like" them on Facebook and do your own research! These are just highlights of the key features.

*They are working on Droid and Blackberry apps that will launch at a later date so keep your eyes open if you don't have an iPhone.
